"Contemplative Prayer and African Mysticism" Rev. Michael Battle, March 2023
Spring Conference on March 23, 2024, featuring The Very Rev. Michael Battle. Rev. Battle speaks from his vast experience as a theologian, priest, and advocate for peace. His talks inspire and challenge listeners to delve deeper into the complexities of faith, reconciliation, and social justice. "Faith, Doubt and Contemplation" Brian McClaren, October 2023
Fall Conference on October 7, 2023 featuring Brian McLaren. Program Description: Institutional religion, like so many other institutions, is experiencing duress. Even though our relationship to organized religion is facing difficulty, Contemplative Spirituality has provided us with a way to to continue in our faith. Therein lies the question. If we are rooted in the contemplative tradition, how can we contribute constructively at this difficult time? And, from a position of personal centeredness, can we be salt and light even in this challenging period? How can we grow deep roots in our own Christian tradition while we welcome insights and seek collaboration among other faith traditions?
"What Does Centering Prayer Have to Offer the 21st Century?" Rory McEntee and Adam Bucko, February 2023
What do Father Keating’s teachings have to offer us in the 21st Century? In an initial talk, Adam Bucko will set the stage for our time together by first looking to the past. How can we understand Centering Prayer’s connections to the historical structures and frameworks of the Christian tradition, and what do these structures of contemplative spirituality have to offer us today? Looking forward, what might we need to add or subtract from these structures to develop a robust contemplative life in the 21st century? How do the challenges we face today differ, as well as overlap, from those in the past? And how can Centering Prayer address the challenges of a broken world in which our contemporary journeys are embedded?
"Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation" Father Vincent Pizzuto, October 2022
In this presentation, Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation, Father Pizzuto spoke to us about Jesus’ coming as a manifestation of a new worldview: the Kingdom of God. The gospel narratives are replete with the theme of transgression, and Jesus used parables from the natural world to impress his listeners toward recognizing the new world he was bringing to them. This new world—the kingdom of God, as he called it—challenged and transformed what it meant to be holy and practice holiness. In his teaching, we are no longer set apart because we live holiness. Instead, holiness is the realm of God dynamically participating in the realm of humanity. Fr. Vincent says, “This is why Jesus’ actions and teachings consistently emphasized the spirit of the law over the letter. He insisted that no religious observance was of greater importance than the practice of compassion and indiscriminate love for all.”
