Spiritual Journey Series - Class Format

The Spiritual Journey Series is foundational for our program at Contemplative Outreach of Colorado. The classes are facilitated by trained facilitators, each of whom has completed a three-year menteeship. Our goal is for facilitators to integrate the teachings and practices of Father Thomas into their lives and relationships before they begin the facilitating role. Information about the class format is provided below.

Please note: None of our spiritual journey classes are recorded, except the Introduction to Center Prayer Workshop. Our choice not to record reflects our deep respect for privacy and emotional safety that is required for the intimate sharing that often occurs during class time. When participants freely share their wisdom and insights, the class experience is enriched immeasurably.

Class Format For Courses 1–5:

The first five courses all follow a similar format. Currently, all classes are conducted online only. The following are the requirements for these courses:

  • We suggest that participants take the free Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop to learn the prayer method before they begin the series. If you are unable to attend this workshop, we include instructional videos in the Basic Centering Prayer class material to orient you to the practice of Centering Prayer.
  • Course 1, Basic Centering Prayer, and Course 2, Human Condition, should be taken in order. After the completion of these courses, the remaining courses 3–5 can be taken in any order.
  • Each course uses a specific book that you will purchase prior to class. The book is listed on the course registration page and the cost of the book is not included in the course price.
  • For questions regarding the classes, please contact us at (303) 698-7729 or Staff@centeringprayer.net

Spiritual Journey Series courses 1–5 involve Weekly Self Study and a Zoom discussion session. A class website is created for each class and contains the content (reference documents, videos, Zoom information, etc.) for the class.

You will receive weekly assignments and information to complete before attending the weekly class, including:

  • Two 30-minute videos of Father Keating teaching about specific topics. The information in the videos is important for our class discussion. Take notes of your learning, reflections and questions.
  • A Facilitator’s Introduction and handouts.
  • Integral reading assignments that expand your understanding and deepen your spiritual growth.
  • Some weeks there may be optional videos and readings that build on the teachings of Father Keating.

The format for the weekly 1.5-hour Zoom session is:

  • We begin on time with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer.
  • Facilitators introduce and reflect upon the topic(s) of the week’s class for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Class discussion. This is the most meaningful part of the class and we hope you will come with your own questions, reflections and experiences.

Note: Each class is offered twice each session; one class is on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Mountain Time and another class is Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:30 pm Mountain Time. If you cannot come to your weekly class, you can attend the other offering that week.

Class Format For Courses 6-8:

Courses 6–8 all follow a similar format. The following are the requirements for these courses:

  • Course 1, Basic Centering Prayer and Course 2, Human Condition should be taken in order. After the completion of these courses, the remaining courses can be taken in any order.
  • Each course uses a specific book that you will purchase prior to class. The book is listed on the course registration page and the cost of the book is not included in the course price.
  • For questions regarding the classes, please contact us at (303) 698-7729 or Staff@centeringprayer.net
  • Spiritual Journey Series courses 6–8 involve a weekly Zoom session. A class website is created for each class and contains the content (reference documents, videos, Zoom information, etc.) for the class.

The format for the weekly 2-hour Zoom session is:

  • We begin on time with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer.
  • Facilitators introduce and reflect upon the week's topic(s) for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Review videos as a group during class, which is generally 30 minutes.
  • Breakout Groups and Class discussion. This is the most meaningful part of the class. Participants ask questions and share reflections and experiences.

Note: Courses 6–8 are offered every other year and usually take place on a Thursday evening.

We are a tax-exempt, 501 (c)3 nonprofit.
